Finish and startHappy Monday!

The year 2014 is winding up. For a long time, I didn’t quite understand the reason why so many people got so excited about seeing the end of a year. Back then, I couldn’t quite understand what the hullabaloo about the end of a year was all about. I thought there shouldn’t be too much of a difference between 31st of December and 5th of June. I reckoned they were both days that should be welcomed with gratitude to God and an equal amount of thought and effort put into them to make them as productive and impactful as they can possibly be. I have since come to know better.

The end of a year represents a couple of powerful concepts and taps into several powerful desires in all mankind. It gives the Sense of Closure. Whatever baggage the year may have brought we it, we now have a “marker” we can use to draw a line in the sand and say “it is over”. The end of year also gives the Sense of Conquering. There is a competitive streak (present more in some than others) in all of us. At the end of the year, we are able to say we have “finished” something. Only a those that finish a course get a degree. We say to ourselves many have fallen along the way but we are still standing.

The end of a year also means the beginning of another one. Hence, there is the pervading Sense of Hope. Hope that the new year will be better that the just concluded one.

These are indeed powerful desires. The Sense of Closure, Conquering, and Hope.

I wish you a most productive and blessed 2015 ahead.
